Youth and Citizenship : CNEX Documentary Screening Tour

2013-2014 年專案

The Youth and Citizenship : CNEX Documentary Screening Tour (青春有為:CNEX 主題紀錄片巡展) took place from September 2013 to June 2014.

Youth is like a bird that sets off from the treetops into the open sky.

For the bird, it’s the search for a home but also the uncertainty of the future; it’s the riddance of hesitation
for the hunger for navigation; it’s trial–and–error for the pursuit of eternity; it’s the experience of self but also the baptism of a generation.

This year, CNEX turns its focus to “youth”– not only “youth,” but rather the continuous exploration between youth and maturity, volatility and stability, individuality and collectivity. We have chosen to promote this theme because we have realized that a brand new Chinese society will emerge from the new generation.

Today’s youth was born into the wealthiest Chinese society since modern times and an era of unprecedented openness. They were born in an era of globalization, interconnection and internet exchange; they were born in an era immersed in images rather than text; they were born in an era that expends its youth in Otaku manners, as “Strawberry” and “Moonlight” types, “Ant–izens”, and on World of Warcraft; they were born in an era that faces weakening industrialization, over–indulged financial games and the crisis of global warming. They have no need for the 20th– century passion to revolutionize, but the responsibility of pushing society, and in fact, the world, forward, that comes with one’s citizenship.

CNEX would like to investigate the young generation of Chinese around the world as they leave the college campus, establish a family, wander through the city or return to hometowns, rent or buy apartments, pursue dreams or confront reality, and encounter various educational, medical, parental situations within their community  family, or village. As this generation begins to play an active role as a member of society, negotiating between purity and maturity, individuality and collectivity, tradition and future, what kind of social citizen will they become in the new era? And what kind of civil society will they then create thereafter?

CNEX had chosen 30 documentary films and organized screening events at the Universities and the community organizations.

The theme of The Youth and Citizenship : CNEX Documentary Screening Tour have divided into 4 parts, including :

  • Struggle for Civil Rights
  • Ways to Justice
  • Beliefs and Reliefs
  • Awakening of Identities

Besides, there were post-screening sections. The guest speakers will give a lecture to the audiences , let them know more relative information, or discuss the topics related to the documentary films.

Moreover, this event hope to collect text or images resources for further reading, to let the next generation took  more contact on the spirit of humanities.
